Pre-Ride Inspection
1. Air Pressure
a. Always maintain the recommended tire pressure.
i. Use a low-pressure gauge. Automotive gauges are not accurate for use on an ATV.
2. Condition
a. Check for any gouges or cuts that may cause air leakage.
3. Wheels
a. Make sure that axel nuts are secured by cotter pins.
b. Make sure that wheel nuts are tightened properly.
i. Grasp the wheel and rock it to try to detect any worn-out bearings or loose nuts. There should be no free play or slip as you rock the wheel.
4. Controls
a. Throttle and other cables
i. Make sure that throttle moves smoothly and snaps back from any position.
ii. Check cables and controls for damage from a spill and accumulated dirt/mud, which may restrict full operation
5. Breaks
a. Make sure that the controls operate smoothly and are adjusted according to your owner’s manual.
6. Footshifter
a. Make sure the footshifter is firmly attached and positioned for safe operation.
i. You do not want to have to have your toes point toward the ground or so high that it is awkward for shifting.
7. Lights and Switches
a. Ignition switch (if your machine is equipped)
i. Check to ensure that the switch works properly by turning it on and off.
b. Engine stop switch
i. Make sure it turns off the engine
c. Lights (if your machine is equipped)
i. Make sure that all of your lights are in working order.
8. Oil and Fuel
a. Check your oil level while your engine is off
b. Always start your ride with a full tank of gas
c. Check for any fuel or oil leaks
9. Chain/Driveshaft and Chassis
a. Chain
i. Inspect your chain for proper adjustment and adequate lubercant as well as wear.
b. Driveshaft (if your machine is equipped)
i. Check for oil leaks and maintain proper oil level according to your owners manual.
c. Nut’s and bolts
i. Look and feel for loose parts while your engine is in the off position. Shake you handlebars, footrests, racks, ect.
ii. Tighten any loose items!
